Theobromine:
Main sources: Cacao beans and chocolate.
Effects: Gently stimulating, less likely to cause anxiety or a “wired” feeling, and can encourage the brain to release dopamine, creating a sense of pleasure.
Action: After theobromine from chocolate is absorbed, it acts on involuntary muscles in the body, helping them relax while at the same time increasing alertness.
Stimulant level: Milder as a stimulant and less likely to disturb sleep.
Caffeine:
Main sources: Coffee, tea, cola, and chocolate.
Effects: Strong stimulant; excessive intake may cause anxiety.
Action: Caffeine can cross the blood–brain barrier and directly affect the central nervous system, leading to heightened arousal and increased alertness.
Stimulant level: Stronger stimulant effect and more likely to affect sleep, especially in people who are sensitive to caffeine.
Comparison of cacao and coffee:
Cacao:
In chocolate, the main active compound is theobromine, with relatively low caffeine content. For example, a 50 g portion of cacao may contain about 250 mg of theobromine and 19 mg of caffeine.
Coffee:
Caffeine is the main active compound in coffee and is present in higher amounts. For example, a cup of brewed coffee may contain about 95 mg of caffeine, and the caffeine content of cold brew can be even higher, reaching about 153–238 mg according to data shown on the ChocoVivo website.
Summary:
Theobromine and caffeine are both methylxanthines and both can increase alertness, but theobromine is a gentler stimulant and is less likely to cause anxiety or insomnia. If you are sensitive to caffeine or want to avoid excessive stimulation, cacao and chocolate are generally a better choice.
